Architectural Design Studio 2: Overlapping Arts (ARCH 381) Winter 2019
Architectural Design Studio 2: Overlapping Arts (ARCH 381) Winter 2019

Studio investigations of fundamental design concepts, issues, and processes. Projects and exercises focusing on the concepts of making three-dimensional forms – organization, proportion, scale, human activities, and introductory site and building design relationships. The release of the student’s creative capabilities is a primary concern of the course. Includes individual criticism, lectures, and seminars.

This studio explores the relationship between architecture and mural painting. The kind of mural painting considered, however, will not be the one that we may be more familiar with, especially here in Portland. Instead of focusing on “street art murals” (murals with a certain level of informality, and a sense of autonomy from the surfaces that they cover) we will take a historical perspective and consider the long genealogy of the formal relations between murals and architecture.
