Architectural Design Studio 1 (ARCH 280): Spring 2019: Design work in a second-year undergraduate architecture studio

First in a sequence of two foundational design studios initiating awareness of the creative language of architecture through practical assignments in drawing, modeling, and artful making. The communication of perceptions and imaginative propositions through the use of diverse media is encouraged.

How do we communicate our ‘situatedness’ in the world? Certainly, the notion of a comprehensive system of spatial relationships such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) can identify quantifiable, numeric/geometric ‘positions’ among explicit, discrete objects, that’s for sure. But being assigned a ‘coordinate’ in answer to the question ‘Where am I?’ seems to help little towards our understanding of the world in which we are embroiled together. It fails to account for the depth of our body, which can’t be reduced to a discrete, quantifiable object, since it’s the very source of our being able to have a world, animated as it is by all of the senses, influenced by our history while being guided by our character.
