For the first time ever, the annual Portland Winter Light Festival is coming to the Portland State University campus Feb. 7-9.  Now in its fourth year, this weekend-long, city-wide celebration of light brightens Portland during some of the darkest days of the calendar. A brand new area encompassing the PSU campus and South Park Blocks, called the Portland State University Zone, features light art created by students and faculty.

“Bringing the Portland Winter Light Festival to PSU’s downtown campus is an exciting opportunity to showcase the brilliant creative work of our faculty and students while transforming the campus environment into a place filled with unexpected discoveries and enlightening experiences,” said the festival’s co-founder, Jeff Schnabel, associate professor in the School of Architecture at PSU.

“The Portland Winter Light Festival at PSU represents the university’s credo, ‘Let knowledge serve the city,’ combining our academic strengths and our creative forces and sharing them with the larger community,” Schnabel said.

Highlights of exhibits in the Portland State University Zone include:

  • Pickathon Treeline Stage in South Park Blocks
  • 40-foot-diameter geodesic dome in the Urban Plaza
  • Large inflatable lanterns lining the Park Blocks from Cramer Hall to Shattuck Hall
  • Ombri Musici projection on Millar Library’s facade
  • Decorative warming fire barrels in Shattuck Hall Eco Plaza
  • Illuminated interactive games in Stott Field

The Portland Winter Light Festival is free and family-friendly. Events take place Feb. 7 to 9 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
