Fridays@4: From Father to Son and Back: A Talk by Anthony Belluschi

PSU School of Architecture welcomes Anthony Belluschi, FAIA, who will offer a review of the life of his father, Pietro Belluschi, an Italian immigrant who came to Portland in 1925 and after a successful 25 years of practice was named the Dean of Architecture & Planning at MIT.  His architect son, Anthony, who was influenced by the world on the East Coast, went to RISD, was mentored by his father, and practiced in 25 states and in 15 countries overseas.  After merging his firm in Chicago, he returned to Portland and restored the house his father designed and lived in which is an iconic example of Pacific Northwest Mid-Century Modernism.

About Anthony Belluschi, FAIA:

Anthony Belluschi has over 45 years of experience in the planning and conceptual design of commercial, residential, retail, office and mixed-use developments for owners, developers and design firms.  As the son of Pietro Belluschi FAIA, celebrated modernist architect, Anthony has worked to establish his own separate career and reputation.  However, he collaborated with his father on numerous projects over many years.  Currently, he is often asked to consult on the restoration of his father's churches, buildings and homes.

Major completed projects of Anthony Belluschi include Park Meadows, a 1.8 MSF Retail Resort in Colorado; the re-development of American Airlines Terminal at O’Hare Airport and the 550 West Jackson office building in Chicago, as well as major projects in Melbourne, Australia; Paris, France; Istanbul, Turkey; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Beijing, China.  He has been involved with projects in 25 states and in 15 countries overseas.

Mr. Belluschi’s former firm, Anthony Belluschi Architects, which he founded in 1984 and in 2000 merged with OWP/P Architects (Chicago), won numerous design awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the ICSC, and Assopiastrelle (Ceramic Tiles of Italy).

In 2003, he formed Belluschi Consulting, an international architectural consulting practice and soon entered into a strategic alliance with Perkins Eastman Architects.

Mr. Belluschi moved back to his hometown of Portland, Oregon in 2012 where he served on the Board of the Architectural Foundation of Oregon (AFO) and the Board at the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA).

As the Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Rhode Island School of Design, Mr. Belluschi was the first RISD graduate in the design school’s 130+ year history to assume the top board leadership position.   In 2003, Anthony Belluschi was honored with fellowship in the American Institute of Architects.
