Congratulations to MA TESOL alum Daniel Scharf for receiving the Mary Finocchiaro Award for Excellence in Unpublished Pedagogical Materials last week at the 2019 TESOL International Association Conference. Daniel and his colleague (Vanessa Armand from the University of Illinois at Chicago) were awarded this honor for the creation of a handbook and training materials for their Peer Advisors for Writing (PAW) program. The program assists international students with their academic writing. Daniel said about his work with PAW: “What makes our program unique is that most, up until this semester all, of our peer tutors are not English L1 speakers. They were chosen because they not only have an excellent command of English but they also have a high degree of academic literacy skills. It’s a great program and I feel lucky to be a part of it.”
