At Campus Rec, we were both inspired and encouraged when Jason Collins came out as the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport, the NBA. Not only was he sharing a highly personal story, he was also creating a platform for social change in an arena that has significant influence in our culture. Sports and recreation give life to community, cooperation, competition, health, opportunity, and equity, all things that contribute to our healthy functioning. Jason has shined a bright light on inclusion in a high profile sport which can hopefully lead to some more barrier-breaking triumphs.
In the Sports Illustrated article, slotted to publish on May 6, Collins wrote "I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance, acceptance and understanding. I want to take a stand and say, 'Me, too.'"At Campus Rec, we shape our values, programming, and services around those same fundamental and universal needs.
So, thank you, Jason Collins and those that have preceded you, for being the "game-changer".
