Amount: $1,000 per scholarship (paid towards tuition & fees)

Criteria: This renewable scholarship is open to all full-time PSU students who have formally studied Arabic for at least two years; had an outstanding performance in previous Arabic studies; have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher; and a commitment to successfully complete the Minor in Arabic, or the Major in Arabic Language & Literature at PSU, and/or Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies (To quality for this scholarship MESC Students must take Ar 301-2-3 or Ar 304-5-6 or higher level Arabic classes); Academic excellence and financial need are a major consideration. 

To the Applicant: 

Your application must include all the following items: 

1. WLL scholarship application form

2. 200-word typed statement of purpose addressing the following:

  • Your past and present experience with the Arabic language
  • Your plans for Arabic studies for the next year and beyond

Criteria: This renewable research and translation oriented scholarship is open to all full-time PSU students, who formally completed Ar 303 standard (fus-ha) Arabic and Ar 306 spoken (‘ammiyyah) Arabic; had outstanding performance in previous Arabic studies; have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher; and a commitment to successfully complete the Major in Arabic Language & Literature at PSU. Academic excellence and financial need are a major consideration. 

The applicant must submit to the committee of the H. & W. Sbait Scholarship For Improvised-Sung Poetry & Folk Songs a one-page proposal, that entails a summary of the intended research paper or translation project relevant to folk poetry or folk songs or folk proverbs and/or related social-cultural traditions

SPONSORSHIP OF SPECIAL SOCIAL CULTURAL PROJECTS

The H. & W. Sbait Scholarship For Improvised-Sung Poetry & Folk Songs also sponsors social cultural events and offers contributions of $100 – $250 to students of the Major in Arabic Language & Literature at PSU who produce a serious Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian Arab American social-cultural, heritage, or artistic event that is open to the community.

The financial contribution is provided mainly to related expenses of the approved activity. Group projects are encouraged.

Name: Aspen Mitzvah Fund Scholarship
Sponsor: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Available: To Undergraduates and Graduates
Number of Awards: 1 per year
Amount: $1,000 per scholarship
Renewable: Yes
Available: Year-round
Deadline: January 15

Criteria: The Department of World Languages & Literatures offers renewable scholarships of up to $1000 to students enrolling in and completing second- and third-year modern Hebrew sequences.  The award will be used to meet tuition costs and related educational expenses at Portland State University.  Preference will be given to students in the more advanced (300-level) sequence, and to students undertaking the Minor Degree in Judaic Studies.  Full-time PSU students and high school students may apply.  Academic performance and financial need are also major considerations.

The scholarship was established by Steven Rosenberg and Ellen Lippman to encourage academically talented university and high school students in their study of modern Hebrew.
