Michael Weingrad, Ph.D. (University of Washington) Hebrew and Jewish Literatures

Michael Weingrad directs the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at PSU. He received his B.A. from Yale and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 2000-2003 he was the Montague Burton Fellow in Jewish Studies at the University of Leeds, England, after which he was a Starr Fellow at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard.

Dr. Weingrad teaches and researches modern Jewish literature, history, and culture. His book on Hebrew literature written in the United States is forthcoming from Syracuse University Press, and he is currently working on a study of writing by American immigrants to Israel. His articles on Jewish literature in French, German, Hebrew, and other languages have appeared in magazines and journals such as Commentary, Prooftexts, Jewish Social Studies, History & Memory, and New German Critique.  In addition to overseeing the Minor in Judaic Studies, he helps promote Hebrew studies, including a planned Minor, in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
