“The Territory” is a concert-length work for nine musicians that combines improvisation, composition and narrative to explore the connection between music and place. The piece is inspired by the idea that topography and watershed, cyclesof eruption, erosion, flood and drought, along with human stories of hope, disaster, courage, profligacy, promise and betrayal create a vibration-an ethos even-that is real. It rises from the land itself and connects native and transplant alike. The movements of the suite draw on sounds, images & stories of thePacific Northwest and its diverse communities.
“The Territory” was commissioned by the Chamber Music America Jazz New Works program, and funded by the Doris Duke Foundation. The world premiere was presented by Chamber Music Northwest at Reed College’s Kaul Auditorium in Portland, Oregon in July 2013. It’s New York premiere will take place on January 15, 2014 at The Jazz Standard, one of the city’s most beautiful jazz performance venues. The piece will also be featured on the Chamber Music America annual Commissioning Concert on January 17, 2014 at The DiMenna Center in Manhattan.
