Bookstore Creates Scholarships

Six undergraduate and two graduate students received scholarship awards of $5,000 each for the 2013-14 academic year, thanks to the generosity of the Portland State Bookstore.

An independent, non-profit corporation, the bookstore has supported PSU in many ways over the years—contributing to its alumni weekend and School of Business Administration, and assisting eligible students with textbook expenses. It gave more than $12,000 in 2013 to the University Library for the Sustainable Organization Library, an online collection of materials related to sustainability.

Bookstore Executive Director Russ Norton says he hopes the bookstore will continue to award student scholarships in future years. Scholarships, he says, “fulfill the goal of the non-profit bookstore to help students.”

An 11-member board of faculty, staff, students and others oversees the bookstore. The board created its first Portland State Bookstore scholarship in 2013 and awarded a total of $40,000 to students.

Erika Nielsen is a recipient of the new scholarship. “I have really struggled to pay my tuition each quarter and this financial support takes an unbelievable burden from my shoulders,” she says.

A former AmeriCorps volunteer, Erika will continue to work with PSU’s Student Leaders for Service, teaching job preparation skills to Northeast Portland high school students. The scholarship assisted her in studying in Athens in fall 2013. After graduation, she plans to become a middle school English teacher.

“I am passionate about teaching and education,” she says. “This scholarship has helped me get one step closer to my goal.”
