GI Bill History and Information
The G.I. Bill has often been called one of the most important and revolutionizing pieces of legislation ever passed by the United States, and it’s difficult to argue with that. Like most legislation, the realization and utilization of the laws within take many, years, often generations, to realize, and the G.I. Bill is no different. Morphing into many different forms, the G.I. Bill remains one of the hallmark benefits for Servicemembers, Veterans, and their family members.
When World War II ended in 1945, the surge of returning Veterans triggered a demand for greater opportunities for higher education in cities all over the United States. In Portland, the result was an institution called the Vanport Extension Center - which continued to grow and eventually became Portland State University. Our university grew from the convergence of the World War II GI Bill, and continues to grow with the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
