Meet our Students:
Who are the Veterans of Portland State University? Each year, we try to paint a picture of our Student Veterans, Servicemembers and their families (dependents) by conducting semi-annual assessments.
Meet our Staff:
J. Thurston Spicer
Office Manager - Veteran's Resource Center
I am originally from Memphis, TN and relocated to Portland in 2011. I live here with my wife and we have a daughter and a son. I am an avid Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. In my spare time I enjoy reading (novels and comics), most sports, Sony PlayStation, cooking, traveling and being a dad.
I proudly served my country on active duty from 2001-2007 in the US Air Force as a computer systems analyst. While on active duty I was able to receive my Associate's Degree from the Community College of the Air Force in Computer Information Systems. Once I separated from active duty I attended Tennessee State University and gained my Bachelor's Degree in 2010. It is because of the military that I have been able to travel the world and gain my education and I am very appreciative of that.
It is my responsibility, not only as the manager of this office, but as a veteran, to do my best to point fellow veterans to the resources to help them gain the success that they have envisioned for themselves. I know first hand the pros and cons when it comes to dealing with the VA and dealing with non military professionals who may not understand the plight or mentality of a Veteran. My job is to help make the transition from military life to PSU student life as seamless as possible. This office has a unique character trait here at PSU: we are Vets helping Vets. In most cases, whatever you are experiencing at school, be it professors, payments, or feeling overwhelmed, come see us and we will do our best to help or find the help that you need to be successful.
