Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, known internationally for her commitment to humanitarian work and understanding of the modern Arab world, will speak at Portland State’s Simon Benson Awards dinner March 1, 2006, at the Oregon Convention Center.

Queen Noor joins the University in honoring community leaders Barbara ’68 and Gary Ames ’67 and Marta ’90 and Ken Thrasher as they receive this year’s Simon Benson Awards for philanthropy. Proceeds from the dinner support student scholarships, a priority of the University’s Building Our Future fundraising campaign.

Queen Noor made headlines in 1978, when, as a 26-year-old American, she married King Hussein of Jordan. She quickly became an advocate for the arts, environmental protection, and business development in Jordan. Today she remains active in those causes in her adopted country and around the world as chair of the humanitarian-dedicated King Hussein Foundation.

The work of Queen Noor matches the dedication of the Ames and Thrashers. Supporting education and business are personal goals of Barbara, a former teacher, and Gary, retired president and CEO of US West. The arts, education, and children and youth receive charitable support and countless volunteer hours from Marta, a social work graduate, and Ken, CEO of Compli, former Fred Meyer CEO, and chair of the Building Our Future campaign cabinet.
