Ben Wiley, civil engineering student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) won first place in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2006 National Daniel W. Mead Contest with his paper on ethics in engineering, Risk and Implementing Innovative Research Solutions.
Ben wrote the paper for a CEE Profession junior seminar at Portland State University. Dr. Gwynn Johnson, assistant professor in the CEE Department, encouraged Ben to submit the paper to ASCE. Ben was awarded $1,000 for his winning paper, which is being considered for publication in ASCE's Civil Engineering Magazine. This is the second year that a student from Portland State's Maseeh College has been recognized in this competition. Civil engineering student Gita Dombrowski won the best paper award for the northwest region in 2005.
