Eight civil and environmental engineering students, accompanied by Robert L. Bertini, civil and environmental engineering and urban studies and planning faculty, traveled to the 2005 National Student Steel Bridge Competition, held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, May 27-28, 2005. The competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), included the 44 top university bridge teams from around the U.S. who qualified in 18 regional competitions--the PSU team qualified at the ASCE Pacific Northwest Regional Conference held in Butte, Montana in April. Civil engineering students are challenged to an inter-collegiate competition that includes design, fabrication, and construction. Participating students gain practical experience in structural design, fabrication processes, construction planning, organization and teamwork. The PSU team included Jon Ayers, Jacob Baglien, Gita Dombrowski, Britt Killian, Mike Pyszka, Jason Rea, Robert Wahrgren, and Jake Wiser.
The PSU team was strong in all categories and were finally ranked 23rd in the nation! Students engaged in a vigorous fundraising campaign and could not have participated in the National Competition without the support of individual and business sponsors including (partial list):
