April 2, 2012. Community Development graduate (class of 2009) Maya Hooper recently reported that she is working with White Salmon, Washington company Insitu as Sustainability Coordinator. Maya has been tasked with identifying and implementing projects throughout the company to reduce environmental impact, improve efficiencies, and reduce costs. Maya is also continuing her education through the University of Oregon's Sustainability Leadership Program, and will complete Willamette University’s Sustainable Enterprise Certificate Program this month.
February 6, 2012. MURP alumna (class of 2008) Melissa Tiefenthaler (née Johnston) recently spearheaded a project in her Vancouver, WA neighborhood of Hough, coordinating the installation of a demonstration rubber sidewalk. The sidewalk is the first of its kind in Vancouver, and will not crack with tree root growth from like traditional sidewalks. The rubber sidewalk will also allow for increased rainwater drainage, which will encourage tree roots to grow deeper in the ground. The project was funded through a grant from the Vancouver Office of Neighborhood’s Safe Neighborhoods Street Fund, for which Melissa applied. She hopes it will spark interest among homeowners to try rubber sidewalks, and that the permitting process will be easier for others as a result of this project. Read about Melissa's project in The Columbian here.
