Meet Dr. Matthew Gebhardt

Professor Gebhardt will be teaching in our new Master in Real Estate Program, a joint effort with the School of Business, starting in January 2012. Prior to joining Portland State, he worked as a Lecturer in Town & Regional Planning at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom (UK) where he taught courses on the development process, housing and local action planning and as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he taught planning history and redevelopment planning. Professor Gebhardt's research concerns the formulation and implementation of urban redevelopment projects and the structures and institutions that facilitate or constrain these processes.
He is particularly interested in the implications of these projects for community engagement, neighborhood change and social justice. He is currently studying the regeneration of public housing estates in the UK as a complement to his previous work on US public housing redevelopment. Professor Gebhardt also has a interest in the history of cities and planning and the role of technology in practice.
Professor Gebhardt worked as a senior associate for an interdisciplinary consulting firm where he managed and performed a variety of planning, development and design projects for public, private and non-profit clients before pursuing his doctorate.
