Community Relations and Umbrella Tours

Not all public relations involves working with the media. Other forms, such as government, alumni, or donor relations may never involve a reporter, and yet can be the most effective way to communicate with those particular audiences. The Office of University Communications can help advise on interactions with the general public--helping to provide general messages about Portland State University, updates and recent news from around campus, or even copies of media coverage relevant to the audience.

Umbrella Tours

The Umbrella Tours program is a grassroots outreach effort that brings civic, business, community and opinion leaders to Portland State University for a half-day tour that includes morning coffee and lunch with President Wiewel, and four stops around campus. Each 20-minute stop showcases research projects, labs, classes, and other examples of faculty work. Currently, University Communications runs four tours in fall, winter, and spring quarters; since 2002, over 400 individuals have come to campus for these tours. For more information, or to invite a friend or colleague on an upcoming tour, e-mail ucomm@pdx.edu.

Speakers Bureau

The Office of University Communications does not manage a speakers bureau at this time. However, we work closely with faculty and staff around campus, and may be able to recommend a speaker or topic for an upcoming meeting. For suggestions, e-mail ucomm@pdx.edu. You may also peruse the online faculty experts database at www.experts.pdx.edu.

Events Planning

While the Office of University Communications does not manage events planning for the University, we can help you promote your event. See the communication planning section of this site for more information on steps to consider when planning a project or event: collateral needs, Web sites, advertising, and publicity.
