Where Do I Begin if I Want to Attend PSU?

For veterans who are interested in attending PSU there are a number of steps needed to make the transition as smooth as possible. They need to apply for admissions, apply for or transfer their Veterans Administration (VA) education benefits, and contact the PSU Veterans Coordinator. Planning is the key to making this transition trouble free. Please allow a minimum of six to eight weeks for processing of all applications.

For questions about using VA education benefits at PSU contact Greg Flores, Interim Veterans Coordinator, 503-725-3876 or veteransservices@pdx.edu

Admissions

Students must be admitted or in the process of being admitted to use veterans education benefits. To attend as admitted students PSU requires that prospective students submit an Application for Admission. Students must be formally admitted to attend a full time.

Applying to use VA education benefits

First time users of veterans' education benefits must complete the appropriate application directly with the Veterans Administration (VA). Most education programs allow student-veterans to submit their application to the VA online. Since an online application goes directly to the VA it is the fastest means to getting benefits. The VA advises that student-veterans allow six to eight weeks for processing first time applications.

Since there are a number of different education programs offered by the VA, student-veterans must know under which program they desire to establish eligibility.

VA Education Programs:

If student-veterans are uncertain for which program they may be eligible, they should contact a Veteran's Benefit Counselor at 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1-888-442-4551).

Note: In the event student-veterans are eligible under more than one program federal law prohibits using more than one program at a time. The VA limits eligibility under any program or subsequent combination of programs to a maximum of 48 months.

Online applications for VA education benefits may be submitted at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp.

Certification of Benefits

Once student-veterans have completed their registration for the term they must complete a "Veterans Certification" form (blue form) and submit it to the Veterans Certification Office in 104 Neuburger Hall. The Certification Office will notify the VA that they are now enrolled at PSU and they may now begin the payment process. Most VA education programs require that monthly payments go directly to the student-veterans. Both Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits and Vocational Rehabilitation benefits are paid directly to the school.

NOTE: In order to receive benefits student-veterans must submit a certification form EVERY term. NO FORM means no certification, which results in NO MONEY.

Transferring VA education benefits to PSU

If student-veterans have already established eligibility for education benefits and used them at a school other than PSU they do not need to reapply. Prior users need to complete VA Form 22-1995 to change their place of education/training to PSU.

Student-veterans attending PSU under the VA's Vocational Rehabilitation program (Chapter 31) must work with their assigned vocational rehabilitation counselors to transfer to PSU. All student-veterans under the Chapter 31 program need counselor approval prior to enrolling in (or transferring) any education or training.
