FAQ: What are the differences between a major, minor and a certificate?

The primary difference is the amount of course work required for the major, minor and certificate. You are required to have a major in order to receive a baccalaureate degree, but minors and certificates are optional. A minor or certificate program is an excellent way to use your elective coursework and give yourself background in an additional field of study. Both minors and certificates are only awarded upon graduation or as a post baccalaureate.
