A $350,000 grant from search technology company Google has created a new partnership between Portland State University and Oregon State University, funding a joint open source technology initiative. The universities will collaborate to encourage development of software and hardware that utilize open source, build academic curricula, and provide computing infrastructure to open source projects worldwide. "Open source" refers to source code that is freely available to the general public and that encourages collaboration and adaptation.

Google's investment in this fast-growing technology sector builds on open source work already taking place at Portland State. President Daniel O. Bernstine said that Oregon "is ahead of the curve" in open source work and that creating more Oregon jobs in the field will encourage graduates to stay in the state. "This is another way in which can keep our best and brightest at home," Bernstine said.
