What: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Portland State University is hosting its 11th annual Chicano/Latino Scholarship Gala. The event awards scholarships of $1,000–$5,000 for academic achievement and community involvement to PSU’s outstanding Chicano/Latino students. The evening includes dinner, dancing and celebrity keynote speaker Gregory Nava, as well as guest speaker Eddie Martinez.
Gregory Nava is producer and director of the PBS series “American Family,” which received an Emmy nomination for outstanding miniseries in 2002. His film credits include “Mi Familia” and “Selena.” Eddie Martinez is a renowned musician and lead guitarist who has worked with performers such as Tina Turner, Mick Jagger and Cher. Background: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Chicano/Latino Scholarship Gala Committee celebrates the accomplishments of students and serves as the primary scholarship fundraising event to support Chicano/Latino students at Portland State University. The Gala recognizes the achievements of the Chicano/Latino community and provides an opportunity for corporations, organizations and individuals to invest in the education of the fastest-growing ethnic population in Oregon and the United States.
Past speakers at the event have included stand-up comedian Willie Barcena, “Desperate Housewives” star Ricardo Antonio Chavira and “Like Water for Chocolate” actress Yareli Arizmendi.
