A monthly program featuring lectures on art, architecture, gardens and historical culture of China and East Asia, highlighting connections with the Pacific NW.
This year's theme is The Fragrance of Discovery.

Topic: The Art of Chinese Seals: Carving Aurhority & Creating History
Chinese seals or chops, though relatively unknown in the West, have been in continuous use for over 3000 years in China. Chops are used in lieu of signatures on documents, paperwork, contract, and art for acknowledgement or authorship. The earliest known seals date from the Shang Dynasty and by the Han Dynasty they were an essential part of Chinese culture and eventually spread to Korea and Japan. Seals are carved from various materials and used with red cinnabar paste. The carving and collecting of chops was a part of the Chinese literati milieu. today this ancient art is kep alive mostly by calligraphers and artists. Join us for a brief history of the art, learn how seals are made and used and look at various examples.
