Margaret Dobson, retired PSU administrator and professor, 1951 Vanport alumna, and softball legend, passed away July 13. She was 81. During the 1970s, Dr. Dobson, a professor of Health and physical education, was appointed to a vice president position at PSU—one of only two women vice presidents in the Oregon state system. She retired as the University's executive vice-president in 1990. A private memorial service was held according to Dr. Dobson's wishes.
As a student at Vanport College (precursor to Portland State), Dobson was invited to play on the men's baseball team because of her wins on a local softball team. She earned a varsity letter, a photo in Time magazine, and went on to compete in nine world softball tournaments. Dr. Dobson was listed by Sports Illustrated as one of Oregon’s 50 greatest sports figures of the 20th century and named to the National Softball Hall of Fame.
