(Portland, Ore.) December 4, 2013 — Portland State University (PSU) and the Portland State University Faculty Association (affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers) have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract that will affect 887 employees.
“I’m pleased that we were able to come to an agreement that allows us to continue educating our students and serving the community,” said Wim Wiewel, president of PSU. “These are tough times, but the final result is fair and reasonable given the economic climate.”
Compensation increases and health benefits were the most difficult issues for the parties to resolve. In the tentative agreement, the parties agreed to the following for year one and year two of the contract:
- A 3 percent increase in the minimum salary effective January 1, 2014. Also,
- A 1 percent salary increase for adjunct faculty above the new minimum salary.
Negotiators for the administration and faculty union signed the tentative agreement on 11/21/13, but it still needs to be ratified by both parties. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) also agreed to a new two-year contract with the state of Oregon, including PSU, in September.
