Auditions


Auditions for Theater Arts productions are open to all PSU students regardless of major and/or class standing. Auditions usually take one of two forms, auditioners will be asked to read from the script, or auditioners will be asked to prepare a short audition piece. Performance dates and audition Call Back times are posted with the audition details. Mainstage auditions take place in mid-Sept for Fall, early December for Winter, and early March for Spring term. Second Season auditions take place in June for Fall, October for Winter, and January for Spring. For Mainstage Auditions, scripts are placed at the Reserve Desk in Millar Library approximately four weeks before auditions are held. Auditions for Studs Terkel's WORKING directed by Sarah Andrews-Collier

GROUNDBREAKING HISTORIAN, INTERVIEWER, AND DOCUMENTARIAN STUDS TERKEL BASED HIS SCATHING 1974 BOOK "WORKING: PEOPLE TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY DO ALL DAY AND HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT WHAT THEY DO" ON A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS WITH WORKING CLASS CITIZENS OF CHICAGO IN 1974. EVERYTHING FROM WAITRESSING TO TEACHING TO AUTO BUILDING FALLS UNDER TERKEL'S PERCEPTIVE GAZE, AND MUCH OF ITS POINTED, CRITICAL PORTRAIT OF MODERN AMERICAN WORK EXPERIENCE TRANSLATES TO THE STAGE WITH SONGS THAT ORGANICALLY EMERGE FROM THIS CENTRAL THEME. Adapted by Stephen Schwartz (PIPPIN, GODSPELL, WICKED) with songs by James Taylor and others. Aired on OPB in 1982.

SINGING AND ACTING ROLES for 4-13 women & 5-12 men
CALL Dates: MONDAY Nov. 30, 7–9:30 pm in MCB 130 and TUESDAY Dec. 1, 4-6 pm in MCB 123

Auditioners should present a scene or monologue from a modern American script, not to exceed 3 minutes, and a short a-capella song. You can be off book or read from your text. Auditioners may be asked to read from the WORKING script. An audition sign up sheet wiil be placed on the Theater Arts bulletin board outside of the lounge, MCB 130V on 15 Nov. Bring a recent headshop and acting resume, including any musical background or training. Be prepared to cite any conflicts for Winter quarter.

Rehearsals will begin January 2. They will be scheduled 6 days per week, M-F evenings 7-10 and Sunday afternoon or evening. Depending on role, actors will not be generally called for six days per week excepting run throughs and tech week.

CALLBACKS: Thursday Dec. 3rd, Room 123, 6:30-10:30 p.m. or Saturday, Dec. 5, Room 123, 1:30-5 pm
For the callbacks, actors will read and sing from sides from the musical. Sides will be made available post preliminary auditions. For questions, contact Sarah Andrews-Collier at andrews@pdx.edu.

AUDITIONS FOR 2009-10 THEATER AND FILM MAJORS

The Department of Theater Arts Advanced Acting Track TA 340, 341, and 342, taught by Devon Allen, requires an audition for admittance to the sequence starting in fall, and is by instructor permission only. It is understood that once admitted the student tracks for and commits to a full three-term year of training. Theater Arts majors only will be considered for admission, except under unusual circumstances.
