Portland State of Mind: Pianorama!
In the days of Scott Joplin there was a piano tradition called the "cutting contest." If you were looking for an all-out, no-holds barred, bare-knucle exhibition of keyboard wizardry, this is where you wanted to be. From turn of the century ragtime down through boogie-woogie, to 1930's Harlem Stride, wherever the 88's reigned supreme, players would come gather to spur each other on to greater heights, and maybe crown a new heir to the throne. The mano a mano keyboard duels were part performance, part theater, part friendly competition. Over the years they became the stuff of legend. It is in this illustrious jazz tradition, PSU Professor of Jazz Studies Darrell Grant will introduce PIANO-RAMA, which Grant describes as "Two grands, eight hands, one hour of jazz keyboard fireworks." The debut PIANO-RAMA event "UJPT (Ultimate Jazz Piano Throwdown) will be a special Portland State University edition. Grant will be joined by fellow PSU jazz faculty Ez Weiss, award-winning pianist/composer Gordon Lee, and rising star Matt Tabor, both PSU alumni. With special features like "Double Barreled Bues Battle,"Iron Chef Medley," and "Solo Showcase", plus celebrity judges, audience voting, and more. This is jazz piano like you've never seen it.
