Contingent + Tactical: When Tactics Become the Strategy
The last 5 years have seen an explosion of temporary design action within our cities. This “movement,” while loose & poorly connected, has influenced our civic culture at a time when commercial & municipal investment has declined. Some see this movement as a response to shifting economic concerns, but perhaps it’s born out of an increasing desire to take part in our cities. Citizens are no longer willing to be passive residents & instead have evolved into active designers of their urban space.
This exhibit illuminates how ordinary people are engaged in making place. Examples were collected by Trevor Dykstra, Coop 15 Architecture, and architecture students of Portland State University, including a few of their own design proposals created under the direction of Asst. Professor B.D. Wortham-Galvin.
