College of the Arts program admission requirements

UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION

Students must first be admitted to Portland State University and, at the appropriate time, to the specific degree program within one of the College schools.

Step 1: Admission to the University
If you are applying from high school, home school, with G.E.D. scores or with fewer than 30 college credit hours, please follow the Freshman Admission Instructions.

If you are a student with 30 or more transferable quarter credits (20 semester credits), you will be considered a transfer student. Please follow the Transfer Student Admission Instructions.

If you are a student attending a regional community college and want to use the benefits of both campuses simultaneously, you can be a co-admit student. Please follow the Co-Admisison Instructions.

If you are an international student who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., please follow the International Student Admission Instructions.

Step 2: Admission to Your Major Program
Undergraduate students also must apply to their majors.

 Music Admission is required immediately at the time of declaring the major. Additionally, to proceed to upper division standing in the major, Music majors must pass the Upper Division Examination.

Architecture, Art & Design, Theatre & Film, and Arts Studies require that students declare the major upon admission to the university, and apply to be admitted to upper division standing (90 or more credits) in the major, at the time of their last quarter as a lower division student.

Step 3: Admission to the Graduate Teacher Education Program (GTEP) and the MEd

GTEP is a graduate program that is approved by the State of Oregon and meets licensure requirements to teach in Oregon K-12 public schools. Successful completion of the GTEP enables PSU to recommend teacher candidates for an initial teaching license for one or two authorization levels. Early Childhood and/or Elementary teacher candidates are endorsed in Multiple Subjects. Middle Level and/or High School teacher candidates prepare for subject matter endorsements in Art, Drama, Language arts, and Music.

Much of the GTEP coursework is part of the Program of Study for a Master of Education (MEd) degree. For details about the MEd requirements go to the MEd website.
