Folding Screens of East Asia:  Multiple meanings, multiple uses

Saturday, February 2, 2013 @ 9:30 AM

PSU Urban Building, room 250 (506 SW Mill St.)

This event complements the reinstallation of a recently conserved Korean Chosen Dynasty screen on view later in February 2013 at the Portland Art Museum.

Charles Lachman, PhD, will provide a historical perspective of the evolution of painted folding screens in China, Korea and Japan; their pictorial traditions and practices that charterize this unique artistic format.

Dr. Lachman is the former Curator of Asian Art at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum and is the Director of Graduate Studies and Head of the Dept. of History of Art and Architecture at the University of Oregon. His research and teaching interests include the history of Chinese landscape painting, Chinese art theory, and Buddhist art, especially Chan/Zen painting.
