Students elected next year's representatives for student government, the ASPSU, on Friday. The voter turnout for the election was 1,672 students; a 31% decrease from last year's record breaking 2,432 voters.

The new ASPSU President, Vice President, and Senators will begin their service to the PSU campus on June 1st, 2006. The new Student Fee Committee will begin July 1st, 2006.

For the first time at PSU, students owned the entire online election process. In previous years, the university created the online ballot and tabulated the election results. This year, the ballot and the tabulation results were in the hands of students. "The ASPSU has taken control of its own elections and will continue to do so in future years," said Erin Devaney, ASPSU President.

This is also the first year the ASPSU used Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) to elect a President and Vice President, making PSU the first state institution in Oregon to use the election method. IRV enables voters to rank candidates in order of preference, rather than vote for a single candidate. The goal of IRV is to elect a winner with a true 50% majority and to eliminate the "spoiler effect" of third-party candidates.
