After a brief illness, J. Kenneth “Ken” Harris, emeritus professor of Mathematical Sciences and long-time Budget director, died January 8, 2013, at his family home in Beaverton.

Dacian Daescu, Mathematics and Statistics faculty, presented his research "Sensitivity Analysis in Weak-Constraint 4D-Var: Theoretical Aspects and Applications" at the 2013 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering in Boston, Feb. 25-March 1. At the event, he was also co-organizer of a two-session mini-symposium titled Data Assimilation and PDE-Constrained Optimization.
