International Educational Partnership Formed

The two institutions agreed to form a partnership to initiate and collaborate on various academic activities,
including faculty and student exchanges, bi-national research, and hosting of
international symposiums and conferences. Pukyong National University, with
an enrollment of approximately 28,000 students, is located in the harbor
city of Pusan, second largest city of Korea.

Oregon schools report increasing numbers of autisic students

The rise of autism in the schools has increased the need for specialized programs and specific training for teachers to meet the needs of these students. The article reports classroom success using the STAR program, developed at Portland State University, Graduate School of Education, Special Education Department by Dr. Joel Arick.

Gender Chip Curriculum now available via web


The curriculum, completed last November under an NSF grant, accompanies the
documentary film, The Gender Chip, the story of five college women and their
mentors studying in science, mathematics and technology careers. With lessons
and units for boy and girls grades 4 and up, the curriculum promotes study,
advising, and mentoring, as well as deeper understanding of the historic and
current participation of women in science.

Summer Study Abroad in Mexico

For less than $2,000 minus airfare, the three week, 4 graduate credit experience affords classroom teachers and other educators an opportunity to live with a Mexican family, experience and study some of the flavors of Central Mexico--where much of the migrating/immigrating local population
originates from.  Working with faculty and staff at modern Universidad Latina
de America, more than 30 students over the last four years have combined
Spanish language, Mexican culture and education study with these faculty
members.

Graduate Teacher Education Program Instructor, Deve Swaim, receives National AAHPERD Honor Award

AAHPERD is an alliance of 5 national associations, 6 district associations and a research consortium which supports healthy lifestyles through high quality programs. Coordinator Deve Swaim was presented with the award at the 2006 National Convention in Salt Lake City.

AACTE selects the Graduate School of Education as the U.S. home base for JUSTEC

The Graduate School of Education hosted the annual JUSTEC conference in 2005. As one of its inaugural projects, the GSE will develop and maintain the organization's website to include membership information, conference calls for proposals, an electronic journal, and links to various education organizations in Japan
and the U.S.

Hokkaido University Faculty visit the Graduate School of Education

Hokkaido University is a sister institution of the Graduate School of Education and
Portland State University. Several faculty members from the GSE have taught at Hokkaido University in the past few years
