Featured Speakers: Daniel Abramson, PhD Director and Associate Professor, Department of Urban Design and Planning at University of Washington; and Manish Chalana, Assistant Professor, Department of Urban Design and Planning at University of Washington.
Prof Abramson and Manish Chalana co-lead the study abroad program at UW to Asian countries. In this talk, they will together discuss their experiences from field studios in Chinese and Indian villages. Through understanding landscapes and settlements as social-ecological (-historical-cultural) systems, they investigate how globalization and rapid urbanization have promoted small communities and even remote villages in expanding city-regions.
The talk will highlight the resilience of these villages and shed light on sustainable and integrated community development strategies globally. They will also address some pedagogical and operational challenges in field studios.
