Behind the scenes of the Local Hero Awards: A sustainability internship story

When I started interning for Edible Portland in early March, I hit the ground running—literally—all around Portland. As part of my internship, I’ve visited restaurants, farmer’s markets, produce and farm stores, an espresso bar, bakery, home garden and even took a trip into Oregon wine country.

An executive, a student, a diversity strategist, a tribal leader, an activist, and a veteran—they’re all taking on climate change. And they all came together at Portland State University this winter to share a live story about their efforts at an event called Fortified: True Stories of Climate Action. Missed the event? Not to worry—we filmed it just for you.

Changemakers: Inspiring action for a better world

They are everywhere at Portland State. In the arts and in the sciences. In the business school and the engineering department. In the administrative offices, student groups, and corner cafes. They are changemakers—people who fearlessly dream up new ways of doing things and develop novel solutions to our most looming social and environmental problems—regardless of how enormous or minute.

Come tap into the business of sustainable beer

As it turns out, an affinity for craft beer can be better for your financial future than a night out on the town would lead you to believe. On October 21, an event at Portland State’s Lincoln Performance Hall will bring together two brewery leaders who are proof of just that—and further proof that it’s possible to do it all while looking out for the well-being of people and the planet.

A tour of Portland’s greenest: coffee, basketball, beer

Coffee. Basketball. Beer. Portland has a lot of great things to offer, but these are three of our best. Mix in a ride on the Streetcar, and you have yourself a true Portland experience. As part of the Oregon Higher Education Conference last week, I led a group of students and staff from three different Oregon universities on a tour featuring three of Portland’s greenest local businesses. And, of course, we did it all by public transit.

Sustainable farming innovations

Would a cow be the first image to pop into your mind when you think of sustainable farming? Not likely. But what if that cow wasn’t the normal feedlot cow, but instead represented the grassland cattle that are raised by ranchers like Corey Carman from Carman Ranch?
