Dr. Thad Miller
Assistant Professor in Urban Studies & Planning
Fellow, Institute for Sustainable Solutions

Ph.D. Sustainability 2011, Arizona State University; M.P.A. Environmental Science & Policy 2004, Columbia University; B.A. Economics and Environmental Studies 2003, Bucknell University

The Toulan School broadens its focus on Urban Civic Ecology with the recent addition of Dr. Thad Miller. Dr. Miller joined us in September 2011 from the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University, where he recently completed his Ph.D and was a Senior Fellow in the National Science Foundation IGERT in Urban Ecology program.

Dr. Miller's research focuses on the relationship between science, values, civic reasoning and decision-making related to environmental and social issues. He is interested in how various actors (e.g., publics, scientists, non-governmental organizations, and policy makers) promote and contest framings of both local and global environmental and sustainability problems, particularly related to urbanization and the management of social-ecological systems.

Dr. Miller's approach is interdisciplinary, grounded in environmental social science including urban ecology, science and technology studies (STS), and qualitative social science methods. He has published research on sustainability in academic institutions, international conservation, and interdisciplinary research and education.

Prior to entering academia, Dr. Miller worked for several non-profits including The Climate Trust, based in Portland, OR. Outside of teaching and research, Thad enjoys cooking, traveling, hiking and spoiling his two dogs, Leopold and Dewey.
