Portland State University President Wim Wiewel has been tapped to lead a group of university presidents working to address climate change.
Wiewel will chair the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment Steering Committee, which includes 20 university presidents who oversee 680 campuses.
"It's more critical than ever for our schools to maintain strong commitment and make tangible progress in stemming greenhouse gas emissions," Wiewel said in a news release. "I look forward to working with the Steering Committee, Second Nature, and our growing network of universities and colleges to tackle society's most difficult climate challenges."
The group launched in 2007 in partnership with the Boston nonprofit Second Nature.
Wiewel replaces Timothy White, chancellor of the California State University system.
