Green Campus Tour: Epler Hall and Splash Boxes
Stephen Epler Residence Hall was Portland’s first mixed-use LEED Silver certified building, containing classrooms, offices, and student housing. The building features passive heating and cooling systems and energy efficient lighting. Rainwater flows from the roof to several river-rock filled “splash boxes” in the public plaza, then through channels between the brick pavers to planter boxes that filter the water as it drains into an underground UV-treated storage tank. This tank supplies water to the building’s toilets and irrigation system, reducing the building’s need for water by approximately 110,000 gallons each year. More information.
