Profile: Report: Fundamentals of Bicycle Boulevard Planning and Design

A new report, "Fundamentals of Bicycle Boulevard Planning and Design," provides the first in-depth guide to bike boulevards—low volume, low speed streets that have been optimized for bike travel.

This report serves as a planning and conceptual design guide for planners, engineers, citizens, advocates, and decision makers who are considering bicycle boulevards in their community. Data for this guide was developed from literature review, case study interviews, and input from a panel of professional experts.

The lead author on the report was Lindsay Walker, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning student, as a requirement for graduate coursework in theNohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning and the Initiative for Bicycle & Pedestrian Innovation at Portland StateUniversity. Walker received a scholarship, support, and oversight from community partner Alta Planning +Design. Walker's work has been reviewed by and approved for distribution by thecourse instructor, contributed to by national experts from theAssociation of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals and a steeringcommittee of Portland-based practitioners.
