Lindsey Wilkinson, Center for Health and Social Inequality Research and Sociology faculty, received a one-year, $6,550 grant from the American Sociological Association's Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline for a project, "Examining the Role of Heteronormative School Contexts in Sexual Identity Development and Disclosure in Young Adulthood."

Daniel Sullivan, Center for Health and Social Inequality Research and Sociology faculty, received a $24,160 National Science Foundation: Research Experiences for Undergraduates grant for a study titled "Examining Race and Ownership Status in Long-term Businesses and Organizing Reactions to Gentrification."

Dacian Daescu, Mathematics and Statistics faculty, received a grant of $244,403 from the National Science Foundation's Division of Mathematical Sciences to study the observation impact in air quality forecasting.
26 Oct 2009 Matthew Carlson receives grant for Asian Wellness Connection
Matthew Carlson, Center for Health and Social Inequality Research and Sociology faculty, has been awarded a three-year, $45,000 subcontract funded by the United Way through the Asian Health and Wellness Center for the Asian Wellness Connection. The grant funds a pilot project that will build on the medical home concept by creating a culturally competent, integrated system that extends beyond the clinical setting, incorporating wraparound services-such as community engagement programs, workshops, support groups, and outpatient mental health treatment-to promote the overall health and wellbeing of Asians.

Steve Johnson, Urban Studies and Planning adjunct faculty, presented a paper on public participation in sustainable community development at the Town and Country Planning Association in London on Sept. 18. Johnson was also appointed adviser to the newly-formed International Town Management Institute of Japan in Sendai, Japan.

F. Rudolf Beyl and Nancy Waller, Mathematics and Statistics faculty, presented joint work in two talks on "The Geometric Realization Problem" at the International Seminar on Low-Dimensional Homotopy Theory and Combinatorial Group Theory in Joseph, Ore., on July 18. This seminar was supported by the National Science Foundation (USA) and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (Canada), with Beyl as the principal investigator.

26 Oct 2009 Alex Stepick new director of Center for Health and Social Inequality Research
Alex Stepick has been appointed director of PSU's Center for Health and Social Inequality Research, based in the Department of Sociology. Most recently Stepick was director of the Immigration and Ethnicity Institute and professor of anthropology and sociology at Florida International University in Miami. During 2008 - 2009, he was a Fulbright Fellow at the Institute of European Ethnology at Humboldt University in Berlin.

Natan Meir, Judaic Studies faculty, was awarded a $3,000 Cahnman Publication Subvention Grant in support of his forthcoming book, Kiev, Jewish Metropolis: A History, 1859-1914, to be published by Indiana University Press. This grant is awarded by the Association for Jewish Studies and is made possible through funding from The Cahnman Foundation of New York.
