n This paper can be understood as a philosophical investigation of the nature of the romantic love that developed between Martin
Heidegger and Hannah Arendt, whom Heidegger later called “the passion of his life.” Their complicated love affair—stretching
across half a century, from 1925 to 1975 (and ending only when Arendt died, six months before Heidegger)—raises numerous
questions, not only philosophical but also biographical, psychological, political, and moral. What might we learn about romantic
love—its perils as well as its promise—from studying the lifelong love affair between two of the most famous thinkers of the
twentieth century?
