In 1933, at a time when the education of social workers in Oregon was critical, the state university system was forced to terminate its only social work program due to lack of funding. Almost three decades passed before the Portland State University School of Social Work opened its doors. During that time, the call for social work education in Oregon was constant; in the face of opposition and frequent setbacks, the relentless efforts of Elizabeth Goddard, Helen Catlin, and Katherine Clark, paid off. Utilizing grass-roots community organizing and political action these three women were the major force behind the legislative decree that created Oregon’s second school of social work.

The presentation will be led by School of Social Work Faculty Emeriti Norm Wyers and Nancy Koroloff.

Refreshments will follow the presentation.
