Applying for the Advanced Standing Option
The School of Social Work offers an Advanced Standing Option to students having completed a BSW degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited program. The program of study for the Advanced Standing Option includes 46 credit hours of advanced curriculum. Students admitted to the Advanced Standing Program will complete an intensive orientation seminar in the summer prior to beginning the advanced MSW curriculum. Field placements will be arranged by the Field Education Office in consultation with the student.
The Advanced Standing Option is available to individuals who have:
- graduated from a BSW program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education;
- received a BSW degree within five years of admission to the MSW program;
- have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above in BSW coursework;
- preference given to applicants with 2000 hours of human service experience at time of application. These hours can be gained through paid employment, internships, and/or volunteer work.

Here are answers to some FAQs or frequently asked questions regarding our Advanced Standing Option.
What coursework do I need to have completed in my BSW Program?
Students applying for Advanced Standing should have completed courses in social history and policy, human behavior in the social environment, research, generalist social work practice and field instruction.
How do I know if my program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)? This information should be available through your BSW program. You can also visit the CSWE website for a listing of accredited BSW programs.
How will my advanced field placement be assigned?
Once you are admitted into the School of Social Work, you will complete a field placement request form. On this form you will list your past experience and identify the population and area of social work that interests you most. The Field Education Office staff will work with you to develop an advanced field placement in your area of interest.
How many hours of field placement will I complete as an advanced standing student?
Advanced Standing students will complete 144 hours of field during the summer term and an additional 500 hours in their advanced year in the MSW Program.
How will my advisor be assigned?
Each student will be assigned an advisor/field liaison once their field placement has been finalized. Your advisor may change when you begin fall term.
When does the Advanced Standing Option begin?
Orientation and classes for Advanced Standing students will begin the week following July 4, 2014. You will need to have completed your BSW degree by this date, and have a transcript. Students will take seven credits of coursework in summer term.
How many students are admitted to the Advanced Standing Program?
About 20 well qualified students will be accepted into the Advanced Standing Program for Summer 2014.
