Applying for Advanced Standing
We offer a four-term Advanced Standing course of study to students who have earned a BSW degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The course of study for Advanced Standing students includes 46 credit hours of advanced curriculum and can only be completed in the Portland Campus Option. Admitted students will complete an intensive orientation seminar in the summer prior to beginning the advanced MSW curriculum in the fall.
Advanced Standing is available to individuals who have:
- graduated from a BSW program accredited by CSWE;
- received a BSW degree within 5 years of admission to the MSW program;
- have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above in BSW coursework;
- preference given to applicants with 2000 hours of human service experience at time of application. These hours can be gained through paid employment, internships, and/or volunteer work.
Interested applicants should follow the complete instructions for applying to the MSW program. The application must be postmarked no later than January 3, 2015.

What coursework must be completed in my BSW Program?
Applicants should have completed courses in social history and policy, human behavior in the social environment, research, generalist social work practice and field instruction.
How do I know if my program is accredited by CSWE?
This information is available through your BSW program. You can also visit the CSWE website for a listing of accredited BSW programs.
How is the field placement assigned?
Admitted students complete a field placement application. You will list past experience and identify the population and area of social work that interests you most. The Field Education Office staff will work with you to develop an advanced field placement in your area of interest.
How many hours of field placement will I complete?
Advanced Standing students complete 144 hours of field during the summer term and an additional 500 hours in their advanced year in the MSW Program.
How is my advisor assigned?
You will be assigned an advisor/field liaison once your field placement has been finalized. Your advisor/field liaison may change when you begin fall term.
When does Advanced Standing begin?
Orientation occurs in May. Classes begin the week following July 4, 2015. You must have completed your BSW degree by this date, and have a transcript that shows your degree posted. Students take seven credits of coursework in summer term.
How many students are admitted?
About 20 well-qualified students will be accepted into Advanced Standing for Summer 2015.
