NSSLHA Teams with ASHA

Stronger bond aims to improve oversight, professionalism

By Mariana Cavallin

Read about the transition in an article by NSSLHA Executive Council president Carol Hassebroek, MA, CCC-SLP in the March 2011 issue of The ASHA Leader. With the goal of more effectively serving students and professionals in the field of speech and hearing sciences, ASHA and NSSLHA leaders have agreed to combine resources.“ASHA strongly values our students and our future professionals which include speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech and hearing scientists,” said ASHA President Dr. Shelly Chabon.

Although the details are still being hammered out, NSSLHA has been placed under the ASHA umbrella but will retain its autonomy as a student-run organization. The guidance of ASHA will give NSSLHA representatives the opportunity to be mentored by seasoned professionals. ASHA will also value student involvement. Current NSSLHA members should visit the association’s website for more information on these changes.
