        Professional Background & Interests

I have been a speech-language pathologist for 40 years working first at the Hearing and Speech Institute (then called the Portland Center for Hearing and Speech and later known as the Artz Center) as a clinician and then head of speech-language pathology, and, since 1984, in private practice in Portland and Lake Oswego, where I see children and adults with a wide variety of communication problems.  Clinical special interests include children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, ASD, children with word retrieval issues, and children and adults who stutter.  I have a history of stuttering and participated as a client in PSU's Stuttering Clinic in 1969. When I teach, I am interested in encouraging students to consider the intangibles in our field (the importance of relationship, vulnerability/risk taking, and gratitude) as well as the specific skill sets needed to change communication behaviors.  When not teaching or helping clients with communication disorders, I enjoy running, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and birding.  I was employed as a kayak guide/naturalist in Sitka Alaska during the summer of 2008 and as a part-time kayak guide out of Ridgefield, Washington in 2015. My wife Debbie and I have four children and six grandchildren.
