Join the PSU Institute for Sustainable Solutions for a brownbag lecture by Tristan Sturm, professor of geography at York University in Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Tristan Sturm will discuss three contemporary apocalyptic discourses of climate change: (1) evangelical, (2) secular eco-activists and scientists, and (3) radical social theorists. Sturm will challenge Marxist geographer Erik Swyngedouw’s characterization that these discourses rely heavily upon politically influential “expert” opinions rather than open democratic dialogue, and instead argue that each of these three apocalyptic discourses offer legitimate critiques of capitalism, advocate for social justice, and collectively contribute to the emergence of a new apocalyptic discourse that could radically impact contemporary politics.
