I want to earn a doctorate:

Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership

Specializations include: administration; educational leadership; post secondary, adult, and continuing education; curriculum and instruction; and special and counselor education.

I want to earn a master's degree:

MA/MS

I want to be an elementary, middle school or high school counselor:

The School Counseling Program prepares individuals to serve as counselors in private or public schools at levels K-12. The counseling emphasis in schools is on facilitating the growth and development of all students, in delivering services that facilitate learning and in providing assistance for crisis situations.

I want to work as a counselor with couples, married people or families:

The Couples, Marriage and Family Program prepares individuals to work with couples and families in mental health centers, community agencies and other settings in which counselors are expected to assist clients with couple, family or relationship issues. Emphasis is placed on teaching counselors systemic assessment and intervention in the counseling process. Program completion can lead to state licensure as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). We also provide a certificate program for mental health services professionals who want additional experience in this field.

I want to be a vocational or rehabilitation counselor:

The Master of Science/Arts Specialty in Rehabilitation Counseling, Department of Counselor Education, Portland State University, provides students with a well-balanced program of academic course work and supervised clinical field experience in rehabilitation settings. The students specializing in rehabilitation counseling are provided with both the necessary theoretical background and the practical skills that will enable them to function successfully as rehabilitation counselors in a variety of settings.

I want to provide counseling services in the community:

The Community Counseling Program prepares individuals to work as counselors in private and public community agencies, community colleges, universities, employee assistance programs or private practice settings. Prior experience in a helping relationship is recommended for individuals pursuing this specialization. Depending upon one's choice of setting, the counselor should prepare to offer diagnostic and intervention techniques to the populations seeking counseling services.

I want to provide addictions counseling in the community:

We offer this graduate certificate for mental health and addictions treatment professionals. Individuals with this certificate can not only better serve their clients, but also increase their employment options. Mental health professionals need additional training in addictions counseling to provide services for substance-abusing clients. And addictions professionals increasingly need graduate-level studies and graduate degrees to either qualify for treatment positions or to advance into program administration.
