Thomas LaVeist Lecture Video

In May 2007 Dr. Thomas LaVeist, the newest member of the CHSIR Advisory Committee, presented the final lecture, "Disentangling Race and Socioeconomic Status" for the Health and Social Research Series for 2006-2007. As Professor of Health Policy and Management, and Director of the Center for Health Disparities Solutions at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Thomas LaVeist has studied the major healthcare gaps in America, the trends causing them and the problems they create. His work is enabling healthcare organizations and individuals to prepare for a new America a minority majority. In addition to PSU faculty and students, the audience included researchers from OHSU, Providence Health Systems, Kaiser Permanente and government agencies such as the Oregon Division of Medical Assistance Programs; as well as staff from community organizations. The lecture was co-sponsored by: PSU’s Center for Health and Social Inequality Research, PSU’s Multicultural Center; PSU’s Center for Public Health Studies; PSU’s Black Studies Department; PSU’s Chicano-Latino Studies Department; OHSU’s Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine;, OHSU’s Center for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs; the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board.
