Mission and Goals

THE CENTER'S MISSION

Our mission is to promote and conduct collaborative, inter-disciplinary research that will advance understanding of how social institutions and processes facilitate or impede the health and well-being of all groups in society. This knowledge can be applied to reduce social inequalities in areas such as health, education, employment and housing.

This mission reflects our vision of a society where all will have the means to reach their full potential as active, healthy, and productive members of the community.

THE CENTER'S GOALS

In collaboration with academic institutions, community organizations, national, state and local agencies, health care and social service providers, and others, CHSIR will conduct research, evaluation, and related activities aimed at the following objectives.

  • Identify and explain inequalities in health, health care delivery, education, employment, housing, social justice, and other areas of social life
  • Increase understanding of how social institutions and processes including culture, politics, economics, and religion impact health and health care, educational and economic attainments, and social well-being
  • Highlight and explain the role of social class, family background, race/ethnicity, gender, age, and nativity in social inequality
  • Provide social policy-relevant knowledge and information to assist health providers, community organizations, public and other agencies in planning and decision making
