MEDIA ADVISORY: U.S. Asst. Secretary of Commerce to announce funding for PSU science facilities at Nov. 9 visit

WHAT: John Fernandez, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, will visit Portland State University (PSU) on Tuesday, November 9.

Assistant Secretary Fernandez plans to announce new investment in PSU's Science Building 2 (SB2), currently undergoing significant renovation to better serve research and teaching in biology, chemistry, and other science disciplines.

The $1.26M Economic Development Administration grant will help purchase new equipment and technology that will create a safer, cleaner, and more energy efficient workspace for students, faculty, and community partners. Once installed, the new equipment will result in 25–30 percent energy cost savings, estimated at $300,000 each year.

Annually, over 3,500 students take classes in labs receiving the new equipment.

BACKGROUND: PSU's Science Building 2 is the campus's main science teaching and research facility. It serves as a vital link in the chain of science education, advanced research, and workforce development for healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and bio-tech and high-tech businesses. 

Built in 1970, SB2 is in the midst of a $46.5 million renovation.
